Why students drink coffee when studying
March 2007
COFFEE
is the unsung hero of many a student's academic career. In
more ways than one, many graduating college students can thank
their favorite coffee for hurdling this important milestone
in their lives.
With the often grueling pace needed to maintain top academic
marks, it certainly helps to know that antioxidants in coffee
are helping to fight off the harmful effects of stress.
Along with environmental pollutants and radiation, stress
can increase the creation of free radicals in the human body
which, in turn, lead to premature signs of ageing and overall
poor health. Antioxidants, which are abundant in coffee such
as NESCAFÉ 3in1, trap harmful free radicals and prevent the
oxidation of other molecules.
Aside from its antioxidant benefits, drinking coffee has
other properties that make it the beverage of choice for those
late night study sessions with friends. Read on, as four students
from different colleges and universities throughout the Metro
share their stories on how coffee has paved the way to the
top of their class.
Staying focused
For cum laude candidate, Cathy Romualdo, NESCAFÉ 3in1 comes
in handy for the often laborious paperwork she's expected
to produce as a Communication Research student at the University
of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.
"Staying awake isn't the main issue when I'm working
on a report," she comments, "the real problem is
staying alert and focused to keep track of all the data I'm
processing in my head to provide a useful analysis."
Coffee has been shown to improve concentration which allows
students to focus on the task at hand and avoid distractions.
"I've found that with even just one cup of coffee when
I'm hanging out with my barkada, I can get more done later
on and with less effort," she continues.
Memory and learning
Aaron Mauleon, who is well on his way to a magna cum laude
at Centro Escolar University where he studies Mass Communication,
appreciates the benefits coffee has on memory and learning.
"Coffee helps to keep me awake during lectures and remember
what was discussed," reveals Mauleon.
Coffee has been shown to have a beneficial effect on short
term memory which allows students like Mauleon to take comprehensive
notes to study in depth later on.
Aaron, who also finds time to be active with a dance group
he founded called Streetworks was happy to know that their
favorite NESCAFÉ 3in1 also helps them stay in top shape by
preventing the early onset of aging caused by oxidative stress
and free radicals.
"Since antioxidants have a lot of benefits to good health
pala, it feels good to know we are doing something healthy
by simply drinking coffee."
Fighting fatigue
San Beda senior Bianca Domingo juggles her responsibilities
as an officer of the San Beda Junior Marketing Association
and as contributing writer for Marketing Link, a school magazine.
She also maintains a consistent spot on the dean's list.
With so much on her plate, Domingo is no stranger to late
nights and long hours. "When you enjoy doing these things
as much as I do, you simply cannot avoid a few cramming sessions
especially during finals," admits this BS Marketing and
Corporate Communication student.
"When there doesn't seem to be enough hours in a day
to get everything you need done, a couple of cups of NESCAFÉ
3in1 is all I need to keep going and not neglect any of my
responsibilities."
More than simply promoting wakefulness, coffee compensates
for fatigue by increasing our level of alertness and concentration
thereby allowing us to handle tedious tasks.
With the hectic pace many people keep, it's not uncommon
to find them rushing through meals and not getting enough
antioxidants from their diet. Coffee products like NESCAFÉ
3in1 help ensure your body receives a daily dose of beneficial
antioxidants in a very busy world.
Best of all, NESCAFÉ 3in1 comes in a convenient sachet for
go-getters like Domingo so they can enjoy a refreshing cup
of coffee and antioxidants anytime, anywhere.
Elevating mood
You need to keep a positive attitude if you expect to succeed.
As Joseph Ng of Ateneo de Manila University puts it, "Even
if you've studied enough beforehand, you still have to be
in the proper frame of mind to score well on exams."
A photo enthusiast who aspires for a career in advertising,
this Interdisciplinary Studies student knows that finding
pleasure in a cup of NESCAFÉ 3in1 just before an exam can
sometimes spell the difference between simply passing and
an exceptional performance.
"Drinking coffee is about more than just trying to stay
awake for a boring class," says Ng. "Coffee is meant
to be enjoyed in the company of good friends who motivate
you to do your best."
Sometimes, even the simple anticipation of getting a hot
cup of NESCAFÉ 3in1, savoring its aroma and appreciating its
flavor are enough to put you ahead of the pack.
NESCAFÉ 3in1 is available in all supermarkets and convenient
stores nationwide. |
