Nestlé Philippines Accelerates Net Zero Journey Through Large-Scale Sustainability Initiatives

Cabuyao Factory Biomass Boiler Facility Tour

Six years after declaring its local net zero commitments, Nestlé Philippines continues its mission to shape a more sustainable future through large-scale sustainability initiatives. Particularly, it is focused on climate-resilient manufacturing and operations; waste reduction, recycling and circular packaging; and sustainable sourcing of raw materials.

As part of its journey to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, Nestlé Philippines inaugurated its new biomass boiler facility in Cabuyao, Laguna last April 27. The biomass boiler facility runs on local agricultural waste to power the spray drying process for milk production, which is one of the company’s most energy-intensive production processes. The integration of the facility in operations will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing operations toward net zero.

By turning agricultural by-products into lower-emission, cost-predictable energy, Nestlé Philippines is lowering its carbon footprint associated with energy use while strengthening supply chain stability and supporting local farming communities.

“Treating sustainability as a core business imperative enables us to sharpen our competitive edge while advancing our net zero targets. This milestone further demonstrates our shift from ambition to operational reality, reflecting a sustainable industrial strategy that is scalable, self-reinforcing, and essential to long-term value creation,” said Mauricio Alarcón, chairman and CEO of Nestlé Philippines.

The inauguration was attended by Nestlé Philippines leadership, including Chairman & CEO Mauricio Alarcón, SVP & Head of Corporate Affairs Jose Uy III, and Head of Sustainability Meg Anne Santos. Joining them were Cristina Macina, Head of Corporate Affairs for Nestlé Zone AOA, along with distinguished guests Senator Camille Villar, Chairperson of the Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, and Cabuyao City Mayor Dennis Felipe Hain.

“Today, I stand here not just to thank and commend Nestlé Philippines and the BECIS but also to express our full support and solidarity with you,” said Sen. Villar. “Partnerships like these are critical, because the government cannot do this alone. The private sector cannot do this alone. We do this together. We create sustainable solutions together. Sustainability is not just about protecting our planet. It is about protecting people. It is about ensuring that every farmer has a stable source of income, that every worker has a secure and future-ready industry, and that every Filipino family will not be left vulnerable to rising costs and uncertain supply for their needs.”

Aside from transitioning to biomass energy to power its spray drying process, all of Nestlé Philippines’ local manufacturing sites, administrative office, and distribution centers are run on renewable electricity sourced from hydroelectric and geothermal energy. Further, it collects and responsibly diverts as much plastic packaging volumes equivalent to what it places into the market and procures 100% Responsibly Sourced green coffee beans for its products.

Building on the momentum of 'The Pivot: The Road to a Net Zero Future' summit—which convened public and private stakeholders to exchange best sustainability practices—Nestlé Philippines continues to advance its net zero roadmap, reinforcing its leadership in environmental stewardship and climate action.
